Hidden Forest of Temples at Kakku

TUE 07 MAR 2017 INLE LAKE & KAKKU

We travel by again boat from our hotel back to Inle where we pick up a bus for our trip deep into the Shan Hills to the hidden forest of temples at Kakku. Traveling from the flatlands around the lake, we drive higher and higher into the hills, along the railway line and passing through small villages inhabited to the Pa-Oh people. We realize how hard it is to get places in Myanmar our trip is extended by over 2 hours due to a bridge that is out and some road work.  We stop along the way at Taunggyi the Shan state capital to pick up a Shan guide. Then off to our destination and we begin to appreciate how long it takes to get to places in Myanmar.

Our guide

At Kakku, we are the spectacle of more than 5,000 stupas from the 11th century rising high above the plain. We have a wonderful lunch at the newly opened restaurant and we are off. We wander amid these mysterious stupas in an area closed to visitors for many years. Many have been damaged by earthquakes and are undergoing restoration. Our local guide explains the customs and lives of the people as we pass through nearby villages. He is just graduating college and like all the guides we have had correct pronunciation is their challenge because they are not taught by native English speaker but teachers from Myanmar.
